Archie Goodwin is a good-sized man in his mid-thirties, taller than average and heavy set, though not fat. He dresses well, obviously off-the-rack, but not flashy, his clothing selected with care and well-maintained. He's usually in a light-brown or dark-blue suit and a straw fedora, always a neck-tie and polished shoes.
His face shows the effects of living where the sun is bright and there's always some wind. His light brown eyes are sympathetic and invite confidences. His mouth is usually curved in a sympathetic smile. His voice is low and soothing, with a bit of a rasp, and he speaks in an articulate manner, good diction and grammar, except when he gets angry or excited and then his Chicago speech patterns are apt to slip in.
He is pretty much a chain smoker, approaching two packs a day of Camels, which accounts for the gravel in his voice and the nicotine stains on his fingers.

Leslie and Dwight Clairmont were born in Kentucky. Their parents were a seamstress and a farmhand. They were poor but determined to rise above that. Their parents had immigrated from Ireland to give them that chance after all. Before the war he had gone to college and was going to be an actor. He was actually getting good reviews and then the world wide tragedy of war happened. When WWI began both volunteered, Dwight joined the Marines and Leslie was recruited to be a spy.
As a Marine Dwight distinguished himself in combat, leading a small squad on several dangerous missions. He was captured in Germany, tortured, and nearly killed but was rescued by his fellow Marines near the end of the war. He ended up in a Vet's hospital in Miami. He had no idea his sister had also served and when she found him neither of them ever spoke about what happened to them.
When he got out she came to him with an odd plan. She wanted him to be a private detective, to act the part while she did the work. It sounded good to him. She helped him get his licenses, and they got a loan for a small office. Life is good, he gets to be "on stage" so to speak with one of the most discerning audiences around, the police. So far he and his sister have fooled them all and have made a pretty good name for themselves. They even give consultations to the local police.

Orphaned at the age of 12. Eric was raised by his Grand parents. As
academics, they lacked the ability to comfort their grandson
emotionally. Instead they traveled all over the world. In a hope to
"distract" him from the pain of the loss.
He had experienced the world and much of it's knowledge. What he had lacked was a sense of true compassion and sympathy for his fellow man. When war erupted in Europe and began to engulf the world, Eric enlisted at the age of 19 with the American Expeditionary Forces, as a medic in hopes to learn those skills.
Moving to Miami to help with his Grandparent's care.

Capt. Frank McCloud was a decorated war hero and now a jaded, cynical former idealist. He traveled to Miami to meet the father and wife of a man in his regiment who was killed in action. He later purchased a ship to hire out to tourists.
As an aside, it was his brother Steve McCloud who was an American representative of the group of museum curators who ventured to Mexico and went into the Pyramid of the Moon. Steve collected a gold medallion and passed it on to his younger brother before he went to war. Steve died during the flu epidemic at the end of the war and Frank survived it. Frank blames himself for his brother's death, figuring that if his brother had the medallion then his brother would have survived. He understood that the medallion had protected him and understood both the protection and the burden.
He saw the spirit within the medallion and tried to ignored it. But events caught up with him and he has discovered that he could no longer sit by and do nothing. He had a responsibility and a burden.
The medallion has the spirit of Achcauhtli, a Nahuatl leader.

James Isaiah Goldfarb: He hails from the great city of New York. He is
rumored to be a businessman, recently arrived in Miami, both to relax
and to look around for potential business opportunities.
He is known to wear expensive clothing, dine at only the finest restaurants, and tip very generously. Always willing to pass the time of day, offer a handshake with a smile. The only black mark, in an otherwise good guy image, is a recent episode at the train station. When he first arrived,a Porter dropped one of suit cases, causing it to burst open and scatter shirts and trousers all over the platform. Despite the Porter's immediate attempt to apologize, Mr. Goldfarb grabbed the poor man by his lapels, and slapped him a few times. But as quickly as it happened, Goldfarb regained his composure, handed the Porter some money, then departed in a cab.

Jack Tarquin Wylde’s dark eyes seem to appraise and size up those he observes. His short dark hair and pencil thin mustache made him look on the cultural fringe and roguish, yet gentlemanly. He is tall, slender, and impeccably dressed in tailored suits. He projects an irresistible combination of dignity, warmth, humor, and insufferable smugness. To Jack, everything is just one big laugh in the midst of other people’s trials and tribulations.
Wylde is a martini-downing sleuth or shamus, who once served as an ace operative for the Trans-American Detective Agency, then went freelance during Prohibition. He is always the total gentleman in the positive, old-fashioned sense: superb posture, graceful moves, perfect diction, and impeccable manners. At home, the brass and jade is not always polished, but the gin is always cold. If you need to take a powder, or find a guy who won't back down, look up Jack

Margaret Ann Browning Drake was born in the woods of South Dakota on April 8, 1900, the third and
youngest child of Robert and Ann Browning, related loosely to the
Browning Firearms manufacturing family. Her father was a trapper/fur
trader as well as farmer. Her elder brother was born deaf and as a
result Maggie knows perfect ASL and has taught it to the crew of the
Gulf Princess for use in the engine rooms.
After high school, Maggie's father managed to afford to send her to college where she met Max Drake, recently out of the Navy and taking over his grandfather's business. They spent many hours in the library and on dates. They were fully compatible. He left school after a year and a half as he inherited his grandfather's steamship and company, not to mention a family of half-tamed Geoffroy's Cats. Maggie finished her education and then made her way down to San Felipe to see him.
She is currently preparing to bring their first child into the world, if he or she will ever vacate the womb.

O'Bannion
is a big man (6'2, 200#) in a lean, rangy, square-shouldered way. With
deep brown eyes and dark brown hair. He has a ready smile and a quiet
voice that can be quite insistent when he wants. There's a lilt to the
voice that gives away his Irish origins.
He has a first name. He just doesn't offer it out.

Reginald Colvert became heir to the now dwindling Colvert Family fortune
at a very young age, requiring him to mature much faster than his years
would allow. Much of the family's fortune has been lost in poor
investments and friends of his father who swindled the young man under
the guise of tutoring him in the ways of business, not to mention the
wasteful ways of his younger sister who believes there is no end to the
money in the bank. At least, that is how it seems.
Max was born in New York City and he got the life-long love of sailing
from his father. He left as soon as he was old enough. Max joined the
Navy and learned how to repair engines and was a gunner. His father is
Roy Earle Drake and mother is Leslie Anne Hopkins, who still live in New
York.
He read voraciously throughout his life. He read the classics, technical books, and books about far away places, to become knowledgeable on everything he could study.
After he left the Navy, he went to San Diego to join his grandfather, Joshua DeForest Drake. Joshua wanted him to take over his Steamship import/export tourist business, the business that Max’s father had no interest in. Max inherited the PS Gulf Princess, the business, some outstanding bills, and a host of wild (as well as tame) Geoffroy's Cats that roam wild around the business that his grandfather brought in from South America to California.
